What’s your favorite beach?
Well, that’s a complicated question. There are so many awesome beaches and each one has its own personality. I’ve always loved Haulover, but the swim suit optional thing isn’t for everyone. For people-watching, Lummus Park Beach between 6th and 14th is probably the best place for catching sight of a celebrity or getting to witness a Victoria’s Secret swimsuit shoot. Personally I like to get away from it all when I go to the beach and I find that the most beautiful, quite and serene beaches are the best, like Matheson Hammock Park Beach or Virginia Key Beach, both of which are a little further away but will give you a real sense of sublime escape!
What if I want to do some serious swimming?
The 85th Street Beach along Collins Avenue is my top pick for some great ocean swimming. It's one of Miami's only stretches of sand with no condos or hotels looming over the beach. There are lots of lifeguards and changing rooms (sometimes not the cleanest) and you’ll be free of most of the crowds and jet skiers you’ll find at beaches further South.
What beach has the best gay scene?
South Beach's 12th Street Beach is the place to be for Miami's best gay beach scene. Here you'll witness Miami's colorful gay population at its brightest and most beautiful, and it's not uncommon to make friends and get invited to one of those wild South Beach parties we’ve all heard about.
How else can I get on the water?
There are a lot of great ways to see Miami, but probably the best is from a boat or jet ski cruising around Biscayne Bay. I definitely think some of my most beautiful moments in Miami have been on the water. There are so many options, it’s a little bit hard to know where to begin, but a good choice for “getting your feet wet” is to take a Jet Ski Tour of the Bay. Even if you’ve never been on a Jet Ski, you’ll have a blast and it feels so Miami. Ask the front desk and they’ll get you in touch. Please see water sport information here.
