CULTURE IS THE KING IN OUR PART OF MIAMI
Art and Culture are one of Miami's under-the-radar treats. Before Art Basel rolled into town the Miami arts scene was strictly "locals only" but these days the cat is out of the bag and everyone is out to experience a piece of Miami's famous avant-garde.
PAMM (Perez Art Museum Miami) seems a little big for my tastes. Is there anything smaller?
Don’t be intimidated by the Perez Museum – it's definitely something you shouldn’t miss. That said, I completely understand that all the hype around its debut probably has some people a little turned off. The perfect antidote? The beautiful and intimate Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. This much smaller museum is one of the best in town and is a great place to spend an hour or two to get out of the sun or take a break from the South Beach scene.
Can you tell me a few good galleries to visit?
I’ve listed a bunch in the Miami section of my website, but there are lots more I can recommend. The ACA, Art Center Allapattah, is an art center founded in the heart of Allapattah located in the city of Miami. It is dedicated to promote an artistic movement in the area with programs created specifically for this purpose so they can have a positive impact in the community and it is a hotbed of new and upcoming artists that are in search of opportunities to present their works, gain experience, and emerge in the art world.
What’s a great place for live music?
Bardot is one of my favorite places for watching bands and grooving to something unexpected and intriguing. It’s a great venue for live music that’s intimate and personal with a vibe that’s totally different from anything you’ll find anywhere else in Miami. The Thursday night Living Room Sessions are always worth checking out. Best of all, it’s just a hip hop away from my place!
So what’s Art Basel all about?
Art Basel is both the best time to experience Miami’s art scene and the worst time. There is a lot of great stuff going on and the city is full of fascinating people, but it's also frenetic, crowded and expensive. The best places to eat are packed, the galleries are crowded, and the entire scene can be overwhelming. Whether or not you enjoy Art Basel really depends on what sort of person you are.
