From its canopies of grand oak trees and deep-blue coastal views to its distinctive city skyline peppered with church steeples, the Lowcountry offers an abundance of visual wonders for residents and visitors to enjoy, and near-endless inspiration for local artists and artisans.
The new Gallery at Sweetgrass showcases talented artists from across the region, that create works of art with a Lowcountry flair. In addition to featuring the work of 15 regional artists, ranging from oil-painted marsh landscapes and abstract paintings to hand-painted cards and original photography, the gallery hosts an artist-in-residency program. The program showcases rotating, in-house artists who create, paint, and design artwork while sharing their passion with the community and resort guests.
Located on the Sweetgrass Plaza, the Gallery at Sweetgrass is directed by Cynthia Miles with assistance from Sarah Miller-Gelber, founder and director of the Miller Gallery on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston. Along with Miles, Miller-Gelber helped curate the gallery, including securing its first artist in residence, Joyce Harvey.
Motivated by her experience with boating and sailboat racing, Harvey considers herself a marine artist and draws inspiration from her trips boating from the Bahamas to New England. Her work incorporates vibrant-colored palette knife paintings as well as peaceful scenes of quiet marshes and serene seaside landscapes.
