We are so excited to welcome Spring Break and debut our newly nourished beach!
The heart and soul of Isle of Palms is the miles-long beautiful beach that visitors and residents enjoy year-round. The beach is also the mainstay of the Island’s environment and economy, and is why people choose to live here and millions more visit. Like most islands, Isle of Palms is subject to the natural cycle of erosion. Most beach erosion is a naturally occurring phenomenon with offshore currents redistributing sand and changing the shape of the island.
To preserve this beautiful Island and continue to provide residents and visitors with a unique wide stretch of sandy shoreline, the city of Isle of Palms began a beach nourishment project in late December. This will be the second such project since 2008, and is a necessary undertaking every seven to ten years depending on storms and weather conditions. Beach nourishment, or beach replenishment, is the practice of adding large quantities of sand or sediment to a beach to combat erosion and increase beach width. During the 3 month project the equivalent to 90,000 dump trucks totaled the amount of sand that was harvested from two spots two miles offshore, then deposited and spread to increase the size of the beach by 500 feet.
The beach at Wild Dunes Resort is bigger and better than you remember thanks to the “beach re-nourishment” project recently completed by the City of Isle of Palms.
