We recently captured national attention for the unconventional use of our Marquee in a feature in the California Today section of the New York Times on September 14. The marquee is seen daily by thousands of commuters on Interstate 8. We decided to replace mundane advertisements with witty puns and one-liners. It is easy to put up an advertisement that promotes our specials on our marquee, but then we’re just another hotel in the Circle. By using clever puns and sayings, we are able to engage our community and make more of an impact.
Implemented in the spring, San Diego commuters driving through Mission Valley quickly embraced our quirky landmark and have begun calling, emailing and even stopping by the hotel to share their appreciation for the daily laugh on their morning commute. "I now look forward to seeing what clever and witty message will be there every week. Thank you for the weekly laugh and keep up the good work," says San Diego local.
Aside from the laughs, other spectators take our signs quite literally. We’ve had inquiries about when our Hokey Pokey event is and if they can buy tickets. We even had a hotel guest call security because they thought we had gotten pranked with our “Cuit $tealing O r Lett3r$” sign. No trickery here, the Town and Country San Diego is just trying keep everyone laughing one pun at a time. At the Town and Country, we encourage our hotel guests to find their fun and to be a kid again, our marquee is just an extension of that.
