Bob Cupp, Course Designer

Bob Cupp, the renowned golf course architect of Stowe Mountain Club, has created a breathtaking wilderness course among the gently sloping hills of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak.

After graduating from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in art, and obtaining a Masters in Fine Arts through the US Army in Alaska, Cupp took a job as a golf professional. His interest in art and his love for golf quickly landed him jobs assisting in the rebuilding of golf courses. Cupp returned to school and obtained an Associate Degree in Agronomy and served as senior course designer for Jack Nicklaus for 15 years.

Some years later, Cupp formed Cupp Design, Inc., and has designed and created more than 80 courses since 1984. In the company’s first ten years of existence, Cupp Design won more than ten “Best New Course” recognition awards. Adding to his success, more than 50 national and international tournaments, including seven majors, have been hosted at courses that Cupp has designed.

In his twenty three years as a golf course designer, supervisor and construction specialist, Cupp has proven himself an expert in artistic golf course design.

Ron Philo, Head Pro & Club Manager

Ron Philo’s 20 years of professional experience include eight Major PGA Championship appearances including one US Open and playing in over a dozen PGA Tour events.

His titles and accolades consist of being a PGA Professional National Champion, 4-Time PGA Section Champion in New England, New York and North Florida, 5-Time PGA Section Player of the Year and recognized as ‘Best Teacher in State’ by Golf Digest and New England Golf Journal. Ron is also coach to his sister Laura Diaz, an LPGA Tour Player.

“I chose Stowe because I know I will contribute to a club that reflects the values of the game, community, environmental stewardship, challenge and natural beauty,” states Ron Philo. “While the choice of Stowe comes with the choice of winter seasons too, which for golf professionals is a daunting obstacle, the indoor facilities of Stowe Mountain Club will allow me to stay in touch with the game and continue to share it with students even during golf’s off-season.

Stowe also gives me and my family the opportunity to explore new horizons through the alpine experience.” Philo adds.
