    Miracle March in Tahoe

    Miracle March in Tahoe!

If you were to ask most people what Miracle March means some might say that it has to do with the start of spring, others that it has to do with college basketball but if you ask the people who live in Lake Tahoe they will give you a very different answer. To the Lake Tahoe community, Miracle March is used to describe a March that is filled with snow storms and often times it proceeds an otherwise unfavorable season. The term was coined during the March of 1991 when the Lake Tahoe area received about 240 inches of snow in one month saving what was, up to that point, one of the driest winters on record.  Sound familiar? That’s because right now in Tahoe we are experiencing a similar Miracle March!

It’s not a secret that this winter got off to a slow start and then continued to disappoint as 2018 began. At the start of 2018, the snow pack in Tahoe was at only 30% of its annual average but we were not about to give up this winter yet. As the saying goes, “Good things happen to those who wait,” and we waited and waited and Miracle March showed up in full force!

Starting Wednesday, February 28 it started to snow and did not stop for 3 days. As the storm finally cleared on that Sunday there was 72 – 100 inches of new snow in the Lake Tahoe area. Fast forward to right now, March 19, and we are in the middle of a very similar situation! In the past week we have received another 72 – 100 inches of new snow bring our Miracle March total to an average of 185 inches! Looking forward, we are expecting more snow this week and this weekend!
