New Orleans celebrates Mardi Gras like nowhere else in the world. Step into the Royal St. Charles Hotel and you'll enter into a lobby dazzling with the color of parade floats, glass bead chandeliers and daily King Cake tastings. Step outside and you'll be standing on the famed St. Charles parade route where the major parades "roll". We'll tell you about our own traditions and point you to attractions and locations to learn about the Royal Balls, Mardi Gras floats and the heritage of the Mardi Gras Indians.
HISTORY OF ROYAL ST. CHARLES HOTEL
We have history in this town that turns 300 years old in 2018! The Royal St. Charles Hotel was initially built as the Southern Federal Savings Bank in 1990. A decade later in 2000, it was converted into a hotel and was subsequently operated by a series of local business owners before our parent company, LOWE Enterprises acquired the hotel on behalf of an investor group in 2014. While ownership may have changed, some staff members have remained with the hotel since its opening! Seek them out and let them tell you how New Orleans has changed over the years.
The Royal St. Charles Hotel was named based on its location near where Royal Street and St. Charles Avenue intersects on Canal Street. Known as “neutral ground” by the locals, Canal Street separates the European-settled French Quarter from the Central Business District or CBD, where Americans first settled. So note to self: The same street is called a different name depending on which side of Canal Street you are on.
