Sunny Days in Loudoun

Not-to-Miss Experiences to Round Out Your Summer in Loudoun

by Jennifer Sigal, Visit Loudoun

The longest day of the year may have passed, but all the activities that come along with warm weather and extended sunlight hours are still in full swing in Loudoun! Summer is the perfect time to explore Loudoun’s wineries, breweries and beautiful rolling countryside. It is also the perfect time for outdoor events, celebrations and more.

There are countless ways to experience this great destination all summer long but here are a few that shouldn’t be missed!

Polo in the Park
Embracing Loudoun’s rich equestrian history, Morven Park will feature evening polo matches on summer Saturdays at the Park’s International Equestrian Center. Dress in your polo attire, bring a picnic and enjoy an evening under the stars while watching two matches. Enjoy food and wine from local vendors while watching this thrilling sport, which features polo players from around the world. The event is followed by dancing and live music. Cars are $35 in advance or $40 at the gate.

The Sounds of Summer
Bring out the lawn chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy outdoor concerts happening throughout Loudoun all summer long. What better way to enjoy the cool evening air than listening to live music under the stars! Tarara Winery Summer Concert Series, which runs Saturdays through September, features some of the best regional cover bands that pay tribute to everyone from Bon Jovi to the Beatles. The town of Leesburg offers the free, award-winning concert series Acoustics on the Green every Saturday through August while the National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg stays open late the last Friday of July and August for a free concert on the museum’s lawn.

The Rosé Experience
Summer is rosé season and many of Loudoun’s wineries are showcasing this refreshing wine during the warm months. This perfect picnic wine can range from sweet to bone dry and is a light-bodied treat that will please any wine drinker. Try the sparkling rosé, the Breauxmance, at Breaux Vineyards or visit Loudoun’s oldest winery, Willowcroft Farm Vineyards, which has a tasting room in a rustic horse barn. There, try the estate-grown Rose of Sharon wine. Not only can you sample rosé wines, but Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery has a rosé -colored cider that is a wonderful fusion of fresh blueberries, picked at the height of the season, combined with fresh cider from Virginia apples.

Loudoun Restaurant Week
Savor the flavors of Loudoun’s culinary scene during Loudoun’s first Restaurant Week, August 24-31. Local chefs, including Executive Chef Marcus Repp in Coton & Rye, will be offering special lunch and dinner menus that focus on everything from farm-to-table cuisine to delectable desserts. Besides Loudoun Restaurant Week, other summer dining highlights include ice cream from the new Tipped Cow Creamery in Purcellville, dining in the glass-enclosed atrium at The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm or relaxing in the secret garden tucked away behind Shoe’s Cup & Cork in Leesburg.

The LoCo Ale Trail Passport
Take your taste buds on a journey through Loudoun’s robust craft beer scene and participate in the new LoCo Ale Trail Passport program. With 30-plus breweries offering everything from sours and IPAs to surprising twists on traditional brews, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Visit Loudoun wants to help you conquer the trail, collect stamps from breweries and win prizes. The trail is geographically divided around the county; try different experiences from bikeable brews along the W&OD Trail to farm breweries growing hops in rural Loudoun.  Use #LoCoAleTrail while tracking your progress.
