If you’re like me, your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat feeds have been flooded with engagement announcements these past few weeks! This blog is for those soon-to-be newlyweds! We asked our event planner, Misty King-Obenauer a few things you may find helpful!

What was the most unique wedding you ever helped planned?

The most unique weddings I get to plan typically involve personal touches incorporated by the couple. From fire dancers, entrances on elephants and time lapse murals to incorporating family heirlooms into centerpieces and such - I love when clients infuse their personality into the events. That’s what truly makes them unique and special.

What has been your biggest obstacle with a wedding and how did you overcome it?

I think the biggest obstacle in planning a wedding is all the unknowns. Next to purchasing a home or vehicle, this is the biggest investment a newly engaged couple will make together. The advice I give to all of my clients is to establish a budget upfront. Then, put together two lists, one containing must have or “need” items in order of importance so you can easily identify the items that you can be flexible on. The other, is your “wish” list containing items that you would love to have if the budget allows. This way, items that you “want” don’t turn into items that you “need” sending your cost snowballing out of control. Also, be honest and upfront with your vendors – it will save you all lots of time and heartache! Remember, we know what a special day this is in your life and we want it to be exactly what you envision.

What advice would you give to ease a couple with wedding planning?

My advice is to always go with reputable vendors/venues and give them your trust! Planning a great wedding takes a village so for yours and your family’s sanity, please accept the help from great, experienced people. A great vendor will listen to your vision/ideas and discuss how to make them a reality. They will take the time to answer all of your questions, assist you in anticipating things you may not have considered and help put your mind at ease, and quite frankly, it’s the most fulfilling part of my role here at Hotel Derek. Peace of mind is priceless.

What’s the biggest advantage to a wedding at Hotel Derek?

The biggest advantage to planning a wedding at Hotel Derek is that you have the ability to design an event that is all about you! There is no standard protocol when it comes to how you plan or design your event. We’ll take the time to get to know all about you and form an intimate understanding of your vision so we are able to execute an event that is as unique as you and your bride/groom to be.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The best part of this gig is the role I get to play in my client’s special occasions. I am genuinely excited for every wedding that takes place at the hotel. When I walk a couple into the ballroom for a private sneak peak and their faces light up, it’s the best feeling in the world, and to know that I’ve been a part of that is the icing on the cake.
