Football star Joe Namath said of his favorite game that “I really love football. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the second best thing in the world.” Though the quote doesn’t go on to explain what his first favorite thing might be, we do know what ours is: Houston. And come fall, these two passions--football and Houston--come together from September through December at NRG Stadium for game days with the Houston Texans.
Throughout fall, Houston is awash with colorful J.J. Watt jerseys and a vibrant energy awakened as much by the finally pleasant weather as by the promise of a new football season. People flock to Houston in full force to support the Texans football team every Sunday with the hope that this may be the season for a Super Bowl. This hope endures week after week, steadfast even as the leaves begin to fall from the trees.
And who knows, 2018 might be the year for the Texans! But if there’s anything we’ve learned by being one of a few hotels near NRG Park, it’s that there’s no better place to witness the fiery Texan spirit than during the lively game day celebrations. Cold beers, crisp white tents, and red and blue face paint are the hallmarks of a true Texan game day, as is some of the best entertainment in the NFL.
Houston Texans Tailgate
Tailgating at NRG Park ahead of a Texans game is an event in its own right. Tickets to the game will get you into these fan-favorite events, as will a $12 tailgate-only ticket available to friends and family of season ticket holders. Parking lots open up 4 hours before kickoff, allowing fans to transform their spot into a pre-game paradise filled with food, drinks, and fanfare.
Fans can also purchase passes to a pre-organized tailgate party like the Battlewagon Crew, or reserve a package for their own private set-up complete with beer on tap, margaritas, hot dogs, burgers, and even TV’s.
Game Day Entertainment
The Houston Texans also boast some of the best game day entertainment in the NFL. Games often include any combination of community spectacles and special presentations, like high school bands or area color guards. But fans can also count on consistent entertainment from both Deep Steel Thunder and the Gridiron Gang.
Deep Steel Thunder entertains fans at Bud Light Plaza, throughout the tailgating areas, and in various locations before, during, and after the game. These instrumentalists are the official band of the Houston Texans, and know just how to turn up the energy off the field in anticipation for what’s about to go down on the field.
The Gridiron Gang is also present at every home game. Find them in the 500 and 600 levels, giving away prizes, playing games, and ensuring that the Texan spirit runs rampant throughout the stadium.
