Down & Dirty with Jilan Bruce

What are three items you would bring to a desert island?

A boat with a GPS, sunscreen, and a coloring book

If you could go anywhere in the world where would that be?

So many places... Any beautiful beach or big city. I love both!

What 3 people would you invite to a dinner party?

Kofi Annan (former Secretary General of the UN), Bono (co-founder of ONE and (RED)), and Jill Biden (professor and wife of Vice President Joe Biden)

What’s your favorite kind of client to work with?

I love working with all of my clients--especially my loyal ones! I love being able to anticipate my clients' needs before they even ask.

What’s the secret to your success as a Sales Manager?

Really getting to know my clients and their needs, and working to make sure they know I'll be there for them throughout their whole stay and afterward.

What’s the biggest career risk you’ve ever taken?

Taking a break from working in the hotel industry to go back to school and get my Master's Degree in International Development and Urban Planning. But it definitely helps me in my current role with my diplomatic sales clients.

Do you have any insider hospitality tips for clients traveling to D.C.?

Stay in heart of the city, rather than downtown. Downtown tends to shut down pretty early, but Dupont Circle is one of the cultural centers of the city. There's always something to do here! Also, always try to book directly with the hotel, either through the reservations department or through your sales manager. We want your business! And we'll be sure to take great care of you and your guests!

How do you celebrate a big victory at work?

I go out and celebrate with my co-workers and friends! We're a great, close knit group!

What advice do you have for your clients on the best deals?

Book directly through your sales manager, book as far in advance as possible, and packages will save you more if you'll need breakfast/parking/internet during your stay.

Describe someone outside of your field who inspires you?

Gloria Steinem. I saw her speak twice when I was in college. She was amazing and inspiring to listen to, especially as a young woman. She helped me to believe that it was possible to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Every time I need a little inspiration or a confidence boost I turn to one of her books.
