While many people come to Maui for the sun and the sand--and they don’t leave disappointed!--upcountry Maui boasts some truly incredible experiences for those days when you’re wanting a break from the beach.
As the road ascends up Highway 37 and then merges with 377, the views alone make the drive worth it. The island unfolds before you, with the ocean visible in all directions. The immensity of Haleakala is striking, and life just feels...slower and different from this higher altitude.
And if different sounds appealing, you’ll want to check out the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm. This unique farm, home to 31 different types of lavender, offers a walking tour, a picnic lunch tour, or a cart tour (you’ll want to call ahead for any of these). Wandering the beautiful gardens at your leisure is also an option--best blooms are found in June, July and August. However you choose to spend your time, you’ll certainly want to end up at the gift shop, where you can purchase anything from the expected, bath and body products, to stand-out culinary offerings for those hard to please people on your list. Farm hours: 9-4 (last tour begins at 3:45).
