Wild and free.
It’s not a description one would normally encounter in the realm of luxury spas, but when it comes to the new Spa at Cliff House, it’s perfectly fitting.
Perched on a beautiful rock promontory in Cape Neddick, the newly constructed 9,000 square foot spa highlights elemental rituals inspired by the natural environment and the untamed spirit of coastal Maine.
Within the spa, a spectacular design of saunas, eucalyptus-infused steam rooms, and aroma showers center around the sun lounge sanctuary where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the magnificent Atlantic. In the signature couple’s suite, side-by-side tables offer similarly breathtaking panoramas of the ocean and the cliff’s edge.
“New England is wild and free,” says Spa & Wellness Director Dawn Page, “so we are focused on nature’s elements here. We are focused on sand and stone and sea and salt.”
Those native elements are intrinsic to the spa’s menu, which includes organic botanical rituals such as the Himalayan Salt Stone Massage—an ocean-minded adaptation of the hot stone massage—and the Seacoast Rose Renewal with serums made from hand-picked wild roses. Each ritual is designed to be true to nature and true to Maine while providing guests with rejuvenating, transformative experiences.
Lavish spa boutique lines such as Elemental Herbology, Sciote, Red Flower, and Zents accent the rituals and appear in the guest rooms at Cliff House.
Along with an array of elegant, nature-focused treatment rooms, the spa houses the nail salon featuring natural and vegan polishes, fitness studio with state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, and classes including outdoor yoga, personal training, and group runs on the scenic Cliff Walk path.
“It’s naturally healing,” says Page. “To me, there is no better location than these cliffs, and that’s a ritual in itself that we will highlight at every level we can.”
Page recommends revitalizing mind and body with treatments based on individual need. Here are her favorite rituals from luxury spa treatments at Cliff House—a sneak peek of the soon-to-be revealed spa menu—to do-it-yourself skincare.
Dry Skin Relief
The Ultimate Vitality ritual hydrates the skin in a transformative treatment while also reinvigorating body and mind. The experience begins with a full body exfoliation and hydrating body wrap utilizing a nourishing blend of vitamins, minerals, collagen, and anti-oxidants. A lymphatic massage follows, and the healing ritual concludes with a Bespoken facial to uplift and brighten the complexion.
Muscle Tension and Stress Relief
The Himalayan Salt Stone Massage is a revitalizing, full body experience designed to balance Tsing points, meridians, and source points within the body structure. The calming ritual involves the application of warm, mineral-rich salt stones to the body to nourish the skin and calm the muscles—resulting in a deep sense of balance and symmetry.
The cleansing Stone ritual begins with a purifying sea salt scrub infused with rare barks, white woods, wild grass, and earthy resins. A rich rhassoul clay body mask is then applied to draw out deep impurities in the skin. The treatment ends with a calming scalp massage and the application of aromatherapeutic oils to soothe the skin.
DIY Skin Protection
Summer may be over, but proper skin protection is vital year-round. Page favors a DIY routine of exfoliation and hydration to combat sun-kissed skin. She combines a finely ground salt rich in Himalayan minerals with coconut oil, avocado oil, or almond oil to achieve both and always finishes with sunscreen.
