Surf’s Up In San Diego

A shortlist to the top surf shops in San Diego

In the sun-drenched, coastal city of San Diego, surfing culture reigns supreme. Below, we’re sharing our top three San Diego surfboard shops you shouldn’t miss when you’re ready to catch a wave.

Clairemont Surf Shop
Opened forty years ago, this business is practically a local institution. Today, it’s run by the father-and-son team of Steve and Dan O’Connell. In addition to a diverse array of surf boards, you’ll find skateboards and women’s and men’s beach wear.

Ocean Beach Surf & Skate Shop
Since 1999, this operation has focused on education. To that end, there’s reasonably-priced lessons for every level of surfer (and as the name implies, skate boarder). There’s surf trips to Baja available, too, where your guide will take care of practically everything: driving, cooking, and teaching.

Bird’s Surf Shed
This buzzy shop opened in 2011 by lifelong surfer and local Bird Huffman. Encompassing 1,800 square feet, there’s something for every type of surfer, including a mind-boggling selection of vintage and collectible boards. For personable service (along with some great stories), ask for the owner himself.
