Sacred Ground

Marvel at the country’s oldest church.

Dating to 1610, San Miguel Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is known to be the oldest church in the United States. Situated down the street from the Inn & Spa at Loretto, the adobe Spanish Colonial-style suffered major damage in 1680 during the Pueblo Revolt, and was rebuilt in 1710. In 1955, the church was restored and still offers Sunday mass. Highlights include wood-beamed ceilings, a jaw-dropping, floor-to-ceiling hand-carved wooden altar screen painted in 1798, and a 780-pound San Jose bell made in Spain in 1356.
