Portland’s Best Wine Bars
Where to drink in the local trend
Chic, design-minded, and naturally, delicious wine bars are popping up all over Portland. Here are two you need to check out when visiting the City of Roses.
Enoteca Nostrana, by beloved local chef Cathy Whims, marries a positively pretty design –– imagine an eye-catching mix of bold colors, alongside quirky furniture like cork bar stools – with a well-curated wine list (many bottles are from Europe and America), and in true Whims fashion, a thoroughly Italian food menu. Be sure to order the Traghetti al pomodoro, a simply-dressed pasta which arrives with your choice of three condiments (like breadcrumbs, anchovies, and Calabrian chilies).
Opened in June, this chic spot in Southeast Portland puts the spotlight on quirky, natural wines. Sommelier Brent Braun has put together a list that makes picking your drink fun – groupings include “4 red wines made from 21 different random grapes” and “what we drink when we’re not helping you drink” – while chef Justin Woodward enlists an equally whimsical approach to the small plates. The crab pasta, with al dente linguine tossed with creamy fish sauce bisque, lime, chives, and jalapeño slices, is especially solid.
