Mid-Century Modern Marvels

Get an in-depth look at mid-century modern architecture in Palm Springs.

When it comes to mid-century design in California, Palm Springs is considered a mecca. The area has one of the largest concentrations of mid-century modern homes and architecture in the world. Architecture icons such as John Lautner, Donald Wexler, Albert Frey, and A. Quincy Jones designed homes for the likes of Hollywood stars including Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley in Palm Springs.

For a guided tour of select mid-century modern homes and landmarks in Palm Springs (think the Tramway Gas Station built in 1965 that marks the entrance of the city), book a tour with PS Architecture Tours with local preservationist Trevor O’Donnell. The intimate tours have no more than five participants where you’ll get an in-depth overview of hundreds of homes and buildings by extraordinary modern architects in Palm Springs.

Visitors can also reserve a spot with The Modern Tour, which is a two-and-a-half hour experience featuring interiors and exteriors curated by author and expert Michael Stern. All guests will also take home a complimentary copy of Julius Shulman: Desert Modern, a documentary highlighting the works of famed architecture photographer Julius Shulman. photographer Julius Shulman. But, there’s no guarantee you won’t catch the midcentury modern “design bug” post-tour.
