How to Escape Houston Without Ever Leaving
A handy guide to the city’s top parks
Houston is home to several world-class parks, which are perfect for escaping city stress, while squeezing in a healthy dose of nature.
Hermann Park is the city’s most famous, as it’s home to a bevy of attractions, including the Houston Zoo, Hermann Park Golf Course, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Menil Park is a must-visit for contemporary art buffs. Encompassing 30 lush acres dotted with stately oak trees, it features The Menil Collection, Cy Twombly Gallery, Rothko Chapel, and the Menil Drawing Institute, which is slated to open this November.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Discovery Green is a 12-acre park dedicated to family fun, and offers a one-acre lake, large children’s playground, and two restaurants by beloved local chef Robert Del Grande. Like Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park also makes for a relaxing hangout with the family, and is especially ideal for nature lovers, as it’s brimming wildlife and plant life, and is situated along the Buffalo Bayou River. Though not technically parks in the traditional sense, Toyota Center (home of the Houston Rockets) and Minute Maid Park (home of the Houston Astros) offer their own version of green turf (though synthetic), and also serve as terrific ways to escape the city, without ever leaving.
