Since the very first Stowe Derby, back in 1945, intrepid racers, professional and amateur alike, have been tackling the, er, unique challenge of descending from the top of Mount Mansfield—the highest point in the state—to Stowe village on one pair of skis. That’s a descent of 2,600 feet over 16 kilometers, and no swapping your downhill skis for free-heel cross-country skis when the going gets flat … as it does. (Freestyle contestants can use Alpine, telemark, Nordic, or skate skis; in the classic division, no skate skis are allowed.) This year, the Derby will be on February 26th; if you’re in town on the 17th, you can join the Stowe Derby Recon, a chance for competitors and spectators to pre-ski the course. And if your chosen mode of transportation is wheels, not wood, you’re in luck: Two years ago, a fat-bike category was added.
