Peace and Relaxation Through Tai Chi
On an unusually rainy night in Phoenix, I had the opportunity to check out one of the several private fitness classes that the Alvadora Spa at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa has to offer. The views of Camelback Mountain combined with the sounds of falling rain and soothing music provided a truly relaxing environment for my first Tai Chi experience.
Instructor Jake Zinn led our group in a warm up breathing exercise called “Painting with Light,” which is a Qigong-based warm up. Jake explained to us that Qigong means “Life, Energy, Practice” and is the original predecessor exercise to Tai Chi.
He then taught us a series of basic movements and breathing, including “Calming of the Waters of the Heart,” “Waves of the Universe,” and “Going up the Mountain.” Through his calming voice and breathing techniques, we began to feel our daily stresses melt away. The session concluded with him leading us through a combination of all of the movements we had learned.
After the class, Jake pointed out that “People underestimate the benefits of Tai Chi if you’re looking for relaxation as well as a healthier heart and lungs.” He suggests, “If you want to improve your balance and range of motion, try Tai Chi.”
